Portrait of Britain 2025 winner

The British Journal of Photography and the winning portrait of Mary and Terry, Leeds.

I’m so honoured to announce that my photograph of ‘Mary and Terry, sharing a kiss’ has been selected as one of 100 winning Portrait of Britain 2025 images by the British Journal of Photography, celebrating the diverse and resilient spirit of the nation.

This means that, as well as being featured in the Portrait of Britain vol. 7 book, this winning image will also be exhibited nationally.

For the next month (until 2 February 2025), digital screens on high streets, in shopping malls and transport hubs will be transformed into a nationwide portrait gallery by displaying the winning portraits that reflect the rich and diverse heritage of modern Britain.

Every year since 2016, British Journal of Photography has partnered with JCDecaux UK to bring Portrait of Britain to digital screens UK-wide. This is the UK's biggest annual photography exhibition, reminding audiences of the extraordinary strength we share and the beauty found in every person’s story.

The winning image

This image was made to mark Mary and Terry’s ten years of marriage together, taken back in February 2024, the photographs were a gift from Terry (a keen photographer himself) for his wife. Mary told me she would like to display the photographs in Terry’s whiskey cabinet so that he can look at them everyday, as a reminder of their love. It was such a delight to witness and capture their story, I can’t express how much I love this image and how pleased I am to see this moment recognised in such a prestigious award.

Look out!

I’d love to know where this image pops up so if you spot it up and down the country, please send any pictures if you can, Mary and Terry will be thrilled to see where the exhibition takes them!
