5 things you need to know about documentary family photography.
NICOLA SHUTTLEWORTH
Nº 1
You’re perfect, just as you are. Camera ready? What does that even mean? No need to get your hair done or hide piles of washing under the beds (we’ve all done it). Just forget about that for the day, family life is bonkers so let’s celebrate that! One day we can hide the all mess, and we’ll probably really miss it, so let’s remember right now as it really is.
Nº 2
OK, maybe not all the time, but when it comes to capturing family life, whatever’s happening in the moment is the stuff that makes the best photographs. So don’t worry about the kids playing up, getting mucky, or getting jam stuck in their hair. Muck and jam are real life, real-life is beautiful and that’s all that matters. Fact.
Nº 3
You can dance like nobody is watching (if that’s what you like to do), because no-one is. On the day there’ll be no being told what to do or where to stand, and no forced smiles or saying, ‘cheese,’ to the camera for what seems like an eternity. I’ll leave you be, to do whatever you like, while I blend in like one of the family, with a camera in my hand.
Nº 4
Life, especially family life, is so busy… and when you’re rushing to get to the next thing, it’s easy to forget all the special bits that happen in between. You don’t get those moments back… I’m there to notice all the details, to capture, celebrate and share them with you, all the small stuff that makes your family unique.
Nº 5
Your special memories belong on your wall, or printed in a beautiful book on your coffee table, not on your smart phone or floating around in the cloud (wherever that is anyway). Drawing on my many years experience as a professional art director and designer, I love to turn the photographs I take into unique pieces of art for your family and home, and my design and art direction service is complimentary with every photography session.
